Two-Day Academy for Local NPR News Managers
When: June 18-19, 2014 (prior to the start of the PRNDI Conference).
Where: NPR Headquarters, Washington, DC.
Who: Public media managers, news directors, editors or aspiring managers from any size shop, any experience level. Seating limited to the first 15 applicants.
What: Two-day training on essentials of modern newsroom management, resulting in a custom action-plan and PRNDI certification. The training will be tailored to meet participant needs.

Meet the trainers: Mike and Judith
The workshop is led by public media news veterans Michael Marcotte and Judith Smelser.
Mike is president of MVM Consulting and associate professor of journalism at the University of New Mexico. He's championed strong local public media newsrooms, serving as news director of KPBS in San Diego and KPLU in Seattle-Tacoma. Mike was PRNDI president from 2006-2007 and launched the Local NPR research site during his 2011 Knight Fellowship at Stanford. Mike authored The Public Radio News Directors Guide, upon which this training and certification is based.
- Judith is an independent public media news consultant and editor based in Florida. She served as managing editor at Colorado Public Radio and as news director of WMFE. Judith has led coverage of major stories, including the Aurora theater shootings and the end of the U.S. space shuttle program, working to integrate local & NPR reporting. Judith has helped advance the most significant public media collaborations in recent years, including the Here & Now Contributors Network, NPR's StateImpact initiative and the CPB-funded Local Journalism Centers.
Together, Mike and Judith bring over 50 years of experience in journalism -- 30 in news management -- leading newsrooms ranging from small to medium to large. Their consulting clients have included NPR, CPB, APM, SRG/NETA, Current, KQED, WKSU, Iowa Public Radio, WMFE, J-Lab, Capital Public Radio, KCBX, Indie-Edit, KUHF, Northwest Public Affairs Network, CPBN and more.

Those who successfully implement the training will receive a PRNDI certificate of completion.
Price includes local transportation, meals and two follow-up sessions
Cost is $275, which includes all materials, transportation from the conference hotel to NPR, and breakfast and lunch both days.
Also included in the registration are two post-workshop webinars to help you succeed in implementing your action plan.

Attend the news manager workshop, then stay for the annual PRNDI Conference at the Crowne Plaza in Crystal City, Virginia.
This year's conference highlights include a reunion of the "Political Junkies," Ken Rudin and Ron Elving, discussing the mid-term elections. Also, you won't want to miss a special performance by political satirists, The Capitol Steps, at NPR headquarters. The conference culminates in the PRNDI awards banquet Saturday, June 21, celebrating the best journalism from around the nation.
